PETERBOROUGH DAA Nene Summer League AT the start of the season there were high hopes that the Nene League run by the local Peterborough and District Angling Association would once again prove to be a successful campaign. Over the past few years the club have worked hard recruiting teams to the river but this year it would seem that the majority of anglers have turned their back on our local river. At the last minute four teams dropped out devastating the field, but my goodness how they missed out on a cracking event as the first round got under way last Sunday. Despite the river being heavily weeded and clearer than I have ever seen it before, thanks to excellent organisation from new match secretary Steve Goodrum, backed up by Head Bailiff John Means, just about every angler was placed on hot pegs on the upper Nene around Stibbington and Water Newton. Top rod was Alex Bates from March, the youngster produced a top quality river performance bagging 18lb 8oz of skimmers from the upstream section at Water Newton. In the same area was Dave Norville, he weighed a level 16lb again a net of skimmers followed by Roy Woodward who drew at Stibbington on the boats, he weighed in 11lb 11oz. With a small field fishing this year it certainly looks as if it will be a tight run affair, Sensas Mark One have taken an early lead on nine points followed by Wades Match Group and Peterborough on 11. There could well be a few anglers around the area regretting their decision to give the league a miss this year if the next three matches produce as well as this one did.RAMSEY AS FACTORY Bank is noted for its fine winter action but Ramsey match secretary Keith Rayment decided to try out the venue in a Thursday evening event and the water came up trumps with big fish showing along the length. Match Winner Duncan Fowkes weighed in a excellent 12lb 7oz his catch included two tench, a bream and a few smaller samples taken on the pole with chopped worm and caster. Runner up was Ivan Steels he had two big bream for 9lb 14oz followed by Paul Kilby on 7lb 9oz. In Sundays club match on the Forty Foot Drain Ivan Steels went one better, bagging the top spot with 22lb 5oz. While many around his fished a long pole line Ivan opted for a straight lead approach which yielded two good bream a tench and several good skimmers. Runner up was Dave Yardy with 9lb 6oz followed by Duncan Fowkes with 7lb 10oz 8dr.ALLSORTS AC The lads from Allsorts AC were booked to fish on pegs 95 to 107 on Gunwade Lake in the Ferry Meadows complex but found the hot weather not condusive to good bream fishing. Fishing the feeder winner Lee Covell took bream, perch and skimmers to finish with 8lb 12oz. Taking the runner up spot with one bream weighing 6lb 4oz was Colin Bealing followed in third place by Carl Stones who had a bream and a skimmer for 5lb 1oz. Fourth placed Jim Owen managed to take 36 fish for a total weight of just eight ounces. p>WHITTLESEY AC In extremely hot sunny conditions the Whittlesey AA club fished their latest event on the Whittlesey Dyke at the rear of Queensway which had coloured water and flow. Winner Bob Thornton showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels taking 17lb 6oz making him a clear winner. His catch included three bream to 3 ½ lb, four eels taken on his worm line and the rest was small fish tempted on the pole with pinkie. Runner up was Frank Bevilacqua who had a net of small fish taken on the pole for 3lb 13oz. Third place saw Paul Wright take two small eels and a net of small fish taken on the pole with pinkie recording 3lb 6oz. Earlier in the week the Whittlesey Juniors fished the Whittlesey Dyke competing for the Richard Marson Shield but after hosting the local schools two day event on the water weights dropped, but the lads still enjoyed some reasonable sport. First home with a net of small fish taken on the whip with maggot was Jason Wilson with 1lb 1oz. Second with 10oz was Jack Hawksbee, small fish on the whip with pinkie. Nick Ilsley came third with 7oz again small fish on the whip and pinkie.DECOY LAKES OPEN DECOY Lakes is the place to be right now for commercial match anglers, just about every lake is producing some outstanding weights. Tuesdays match fished on the Willows saw Wades Match Group rod Mick King win his first open at the venue and he was also extremely pleased to weigh in his first ever three figure weight. Mick fished pole and pellet up in the water to weigh in an excellent 113lb 4oz. There is just no stopping John Whincup in the weekend open events here, he claimed the top spot in both the Saturday and Sunday opens. John keeps it simple fishing up in the water with pellet or should I say, he makes it look simple but has obviously perfected the approach far better than any other angler in the area at this moment. Saturdays match saw him weigh in 99lb 2oz from the Beastie Pool while on Sunday the venue fished even better with John finishing on 136lb. Decoy Lakes Willows, Tues 1 M King, Wades MG, 113lb 4oz; 2 R Tweddle, Bourne MG, 83lb 12oz; 3 D Cox, Ship Shape Tackle, 75lb 12oz. JVAC Up-in-the-water exponent Martin Freeman made no mistakes from fancied peg nine in the latest JVAC match on Decoy's Horseshoe Lake. Using his favourite banded pellet hook bait fished 18 inches deep at 13 metres, Freeman obliterated the match with a superb 130lb 7oz of mainly F1s.Two pegs away at 11 was Dave Parsons, who used his new pole at 16 metres for his runners-up weight of 59lb 11oz, while Kevin Wilmot did well to finish third from peg 4 with 56lb 10oz.BENWICK AC FLOODS Ferry was the venue for the lads from Benwick AC with Terry Fairbrother taking the top spot with three tench and a net of small fish to weigh in 13lb 5oz. Runner up was John Seekins who tempted a tench and three bream for 10lb 11oz. Third place went to Tony Ingram with 8lb 9oz followed by Kevin Gaunt with 7lb 1oz. ..BLACK BULL AC GARY Cranwell made light work of difficult conditions in Saturdays Black Bull outing to East Delph Lakes finishing top with 71lb 8oz. Fishing pole and pellet he took carp to double figures to see of the challenge of Barry Anderson who came second with 28lb 8oz flowed by Pete Whitwell on 21lb 8oz.Result: DEEPING ST JAMES Deeping St James AC members found good colour and flow on their re-arranged venue at Fields End Bridge last Sunday. With the PDAA summer league pegged on the opposite bank to them at Stibbington it was an easy decision to move their match. It was not plain sailing on a venue that had been in cracking form, a mixed catch of 3lb 11oz for Trevor Marvin was enough to secure the top spot. A 2lb.3oz catch of hand-sized skimmers saw Peter Hodson into second place with Ray Dodkin third on 2lb.4oz.HOLBEACH AC LOCAL anglers fishing the King of the Fens event this coming Sunday on the South Holland Drain will be interested to see the result of last Saturday’s Terry Mainsbridge Memorial Match. It did not fish that well with the two end pegs seeing all the action. 17-year-old James Wright took first place from peg he fished at six metres and put together a net of small roach, skimmers and perch on squatt and pinkie over groundbait to record his first ever open win with 8lb 2oz. The experienced Wayne Swinscoe drew the downstream end peg and took full advantage of his good fortune, fishing similar tactics to the winner, the Trabucco backed rod finished with 7lb 6oz. Result: 1 J Wright, Holbeach DAC, 8lb 2oz; 2 W Swinscoe, Trabucco VDE, 7lb 6oz; 3 H Schumann, FM Stanjay, 6lb 4oz; 4 M Whittaker, Daiwa Angling Direct, 5lb 7oz./b> ANGLING TIMES/VDE SUPERSUP SEMI FINAL Got a match result?
